Exterior Designing

Unlike an architecture firm, which designs homes from the outside, making the interior fit, at Vilasa we draw from your inspiration—targeting the way you like to live—building an exterior around living spaces.

Are you aware of the term “exterior design”? If you have never heard of it before, you will want to take note. It is the process of making the exterior of one’s home visually appealing in a manner that is ideal for the style and architecture of the property. Many people underscore the value of designing the exterior of their homes. The truth is, there are various reasons to put together a look that is not only neat and clean, but stylish to boot.

Nothing is more gratifying than a welcoming, finished, well-appointed living space that blends personal style with colors, lines and textures in a way that says “this is me.” Just as important is the exterior design of your home – the details, dimension and contrast of your exterior reflect your personal style too. At Vilasa – Luxury Living, we’re passionate about applying accessible design concepts to the outside of your home. We appreciate the power of architectural details. And we know that trim, siding, color, doors and windows can all work together to create beautiful exterior designs that reflect who you are and where you live. We also know sometimes the choices are overwhelming and it’s hard to know where to start. But we can help. With our exterior design resources, and our decades of experience as the category leader in innovative exterior design products, we can help you mix and match textures, colors and styles to create fabulous exteriors.

What is Architecture?

Though a basic question in its facade, “what is architecture?” is one of the most difficult questions architects ask themselves. The architect industry considers this is a guideline for their designs—a philosophical question required to be answered in the creative process.

Marcus Vitruvius describes architecture as firmness, commodity, and delight. There are many definitions of architecture. Some consider it as a science and business, a social art, and artful science. Architecture is a high quality of design.

Architecture can also be an expression of a person through a building. But when one goes inside, Architecture can only say so much about the inside. The outside of a building can express what a person is or what he can do for a person, but as they always say—it’s the inside the matters. Considered in this inside is the design of a building, both the exterior and the interior.

Architecture has been closely related to the history of art. Architecture itself is art. There are three reasons behind this. One, during the arts movements, architecture went upwards together with the development of visual art, and most major ‘art’ movements have influenced architecture and the fine arts. Second, because they were built with aesthetics, the process of architecture typically involves the craft of artists, craftsmen, and labourers. Third, many of the world’s finest and oldest buildings were sanctuaries for art and are still accepting art.

The Fundamental Principles of Architecture

There four fundamental principles of Architecture that we must know, these are: Scale, Balance, Proportion, and Rhythm. These principles create harmony and timelessness of the design, when applied correctly.

Scale refers to how the size of a home are measured compared to the size of the environment and the elements in that certain environment. For example, the size of a house and a lot or the size of a house compared to other homes in that certain village or subdivision.

Remember: When spaces are designed, always take into account the size of the human body.

Balance means the “visual relationship among parts of a house (e.g. arrangement, size, shape of various components of a house). When it is obtained, there is a balance between two different things. This, however, does not mean that they are symmetrical but that they are just complementing each other, despite being the opposite.

Rhythm is the repetitive use of an element to create patterns. An example of this would be windows, doors, designs, railings and other materials. This creates a pattern wherein it is recognizable and aesthetically pleasing.

Proportion – Proportion is similar to scale and balance. Scale refers to the size of the first object to another, while proportion is the opposite. Proportion is thinking of the right size of the second object, or what the ratio of size of the second object should be from the first object.

Difference of exterior design and interior design

The difference between exterior and interiors design relies on the focus of these fields.

Exterior design, as the name suggests, is the act of designing an exterior of a building. The process includes the skin roof and foundation element of a building. An exterior designer respects the uncontrollable part of an environment. The materials used in these processes are usually cheaper than interior materials. Examples of these materials include bricks, rending, retaining walls, facades, precast concretes, wall coating and exterior panels.

Interior design on the other hand is the process of designing an interior of a house. It is a multifaceted profession that helps in the procedure of conceptual development, stakeholder communication, and design execution. Interior designers go beyond the aesthetics of a home, they also handle the technical aspects of it. When interior designers choose the design of a house, they do this considering the purpose of these designs.

Importance of Exterior Design

Exterior design is as important as the architecture of a building itself. Without exterior design, the full potential of architecture will be out of place and will not compliment the design of the building.

Exterior design focuses on the architecture of a dwelling or a space and can expand your home by combining nature and man-made structures. Exterior designers aim to make a home or structure comfortable through integrating the home with the environment that surrounds it. They are professionals that make the outdoor design of a building purposeful, aesthetically pleasing, and unique. All of this while considering your budget.

Exterior Designers solve mechanical design problems and conceptual and detail layout for engineering hardware. They are also tasked with the business strategy of a project.

Important things to know about in exterior designing

The process of design is a lot to handle. Just like other professions, exterior designing has a lot of processes to go on before it is done.

Identify the goals of a project – if you haven’t identified it yet, you are in for a messy work. Identifying projects can clear the future hassles of a project. It can also help you save more time with future projects. In identifying the goals, you must identify what type of design you are going to need.

For example:

The three types of designs you can choose from are:

  • Modern design focuses on style and contemporary design
  • Simple modest structure sets its eyes on massing and detailing.

After developing project goals, you must develop a strategy of your exterior design. This would make the strategy a lot easier.

  • Develop a strategy – producing a strategy can be: the style of a house, allowed budget, the sturdiness of these designs, and the timeline of the project.

The functions of a design and its energy efficiency. Foundation works and large trees can also affect the cost. The solar design and thermal properties of your house, rainwater collection, the design of your roof. These can be a big factor in the cost of the designs. Another factor can be the amount of site work, some activities in exterior design can be done easily by you.

What if these goals clash?

Some goals can clash to one another. These goals can be incompatible with the monetary concerns of the project. We know it can be tough to let go of these goals, but we have to let go of things in order for more opportunities to come. An example of this would be the aesthetics and performance. Understanding that performance comes first can get you the safety net in constructing buildings.

The geography and climate of your location

Through understanding the geographical location of a site, a lot of factors can be covered. This includes the characteristics of an exterior design. The Solar orientation, vegetation, the impact of tree removal, the views, privacy, and security of the exterior design can massively affect how a project will be built.

The floor plan

The floor plan affects the exterior design and the exterior design affects the floor plan. These two elements of exterior design projects are dependent on each other. Exterior designers often look at an exterior design, then back to a floor plan to make sure the exterior designs are still on track with its purpose and that no elements in the design will be affected when changing something on the design.

Floor plans and exterior designs come together, always. When making an exterior design, always remember that you should design it together with the floor plan. As mentioned above, an exterior designer goes back and forth between an exterior design and a floor plan. This process is done until a final design has been made.

Contemporary and traditional houses have different sets of characteristics that make them work together. For example, a traditional house can have gable and hipped roofs to get their target audience, while on the other hand, a modern home can have flat roof that helps in the creating contemporary houses’ forms.
